Housnei Aziz (b. 1943. Palestine / Denmark)

Homeland, maternity and faith

lives in Aalborg East and meets with me without a veil. The veil is only put on, along with a beautiful Palestinian traditional dress, when I have to photograph her. The daughter translates, but her mother also speaks some English. They serve both Danish and Arabic coffee and cake. In the background is a large TV on low volume with over 1500 Arabic channels. I see the television as her window into the world, she had to flee from when she was five years old and has longed for ever since. The daughter, who is wearing western clothes, also dons a veil when I photograph her, says that I must not show the female form in the sculptural portrait. I choose, therefore, to make a simple tight form that shows only the face and cut to a square format like a window - a piece missing – which the television fills in relation to her country and background.
