Halime Sofe Farah (b. 1930. Somalia/Denmark)

Poet, freedom fighter and mother

She was a Somali freedom fighter and heroine in her homeland while having a tough upbringing with many deaths in the immediate family. Then came the Civil War and she fled to Denmark where she now lives in Gellerup Park in Aarhus together with her blind and war-damaged daughter and is, therefore, a full-time mother. She speaks only Somali, but sings her own poems where the voice, atmosphere and expression provide an intimacy and a feeling of belonging to those who are present. I have emphasized motherhood with the big blind daughter taking up most of Halimes body on one side and, on the other side, all her five children of whom three are dead. They are laid in a star shape like the Somali flag, which she kissed when we visited her. As a covered Muslim, so is her sculpture also covered.
