Arlette Andersen (b. 1924. France / Denmark)
Auschwitz prisoner no. 74853
She is a French Jew who survived Auschwitz, and the prisoner number is tattooed on her arm. She wouldn’t speak about this until she was over 50 where, at some point, she was asked to give a talk about it and agreed, because she could feel the beginnings of forgetfulness around war atrocity. Since then, she has given many lectures, especially to young people, to help prevent similar violations in the future. She appears both fragile and strong with a quiet but confrontational insistence. I’ve tried to capture this in the symbolic portrait by making the body small and the head large. The arm with her prison number is engraved clearly on the front side of the figure.
