Camilla Isanovic (b. 1942. Bosnia/Denmark)

Harsh fate - irrepressible life force

She had to flee from the war in the Balkans and lost a son during the escape. She has two children living in Denmark, but lives alone on the west coast of Jutland in an apartment, which is a testimony of joy in the textile craft. She made her own blankets, which were hidden by neighbors during the war. These were returned to her. Apart from that, there was crochet work and intense curtain designs, which entranced me. She told heartbreakingly in Danish about the violent escape and said that all the refugees that she sees on TV is herself. She identifies with them while actively taking part in the life of the small town where she lives. She’s Muslim, but without being covered. I chose to use the curtains with all the pleats and folds as a stage curtain for the heart region where the one side opens to a face and the other side, an absence from it. The tears are in this portrait.
