Midori Fischer (b. 1942. Japan / UK)

Belonging and sensuality

She grew up in a western orientated family in Japan. She traveled to America at the age of 18 and a few years later, she married a Dane. In Denmark she has worked, among other things, as interpreter and guide for both Danes and Japanese people in their own cultures. She feels neither like a Dane nor Japanese, but is in many ways more Japanese now than when she was in Japan. Her sculptural portrait emphasizes her flexibility in relation to cultures where the arms, both in front and behind, create a tight circle/spiral motion that associates with the simple, austere Japanese while, at the same time, extending far in demanding, rotating movements – which is always the case when entering into new connections.
